House Symbiosis stands as a testament to modern architectural innovation, drawing inspiration from the sleek lines of yachts and the aerodynamic forms of aerospace and automotive design. This project is more than a structure; it is a statement of freedom, floating between the realms of sky and sea. It caters to the evolving needs of contemporary lifestyles, fostering familial connections while delicately balancing shared and private spaces.
The uniqueness of House Symbiosis lies in its dual nature, designed to house two sibling families in a symbiotic relationship. The architectural layout, resembling an 'L' shape, strategically utilizes only 27% of the plot for construction, demonstrating a commitment to environmental consciousness and leaving ample space for communal interaction and green areas. This approach not only respects the environment but also enhances the quality of life for its residents.
Construction of House Symbiosis was an intricate process, involving layered wooden formworks for concrete casting, particularly for the complex double-curved geometries. A standout feature is the sculptural ribbon-like element that graces the front inner facade, requiring precise formworking to achieve its dynamic curvature.
The technical specifications of House Symbiosis reveal a total housing area of 440 sqm, evenly divided between the two residences, with an additional communal core area of 85 sqm. The project's underground area spans 185 sqm, adhering to a 40% building site coverage. The total building area reaches 700 sqm, matching the site area, showcasing a thoughtful use of space.
House Symbiosis is not just a living space but an interactive experience. Its design emphasizes internal circulation, adopting a sculptural approach that results in a dynamic volumetric massing. The residence seems to be in motion, heading in two opposite directions, mirroring the lives of the families within.
Located in a serene Athens neighborhood, the project's design phase began in mid-2018 and concluded in early 2019, with construction spanning from March 2020 to the end of 2022. The final touches were added in early 2023, with the project being furnished and photographed professionally by May 2023. The design was driven by the desire to create a new typology for double residency, enabling sibling families to enjoy togetherness while maintaining their private sanctuaries.
House Symbiosis overcame significant challenges, particularly in balancing privacy with communal living. The architectural team at Direction Architects, led by John Kanakas and Kostas Christopoulos, navigated these complexities through innovative design solutions. The project's success was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2024, a testament to its exceptional design and contribution to the architectural community.
